Washington State May Require Married Couples To Procreate
Washington State May Require Married Couples To Procreate
The Washington Supreme Court stated homosexuals could be prevented from marrying "because Washington has a legitimate interest in preserving marriage for couples who can procreate."

In response, Initiative 957 has been accepted by Washington Secretary of State Sam Reed. This initiative, if passed, would in part, require "married couples to provide proof of procreation within three years of the date of marriage or have their marriage automatically annulled" picked by 2manyusernames 3 years ago

The press release goes into more detail.

They also plan on placing initiatives which would "prohibit divorce or separation when a married couple has children together", and "make having a child together the equivalent of marriage."

Obviously will never pass, let alone face challenges. It does point out the ridiculous stance that same-sex marriages should be illegal simply because no procreation is possible.

This can't pass. There are simply to many infertile heterosexual men/women for this bill to be fair. Not to mention the fact that couples should choose when to have kids.

The fact that people are taking this seriously, that this might be a way to outlaw the 'big, bad' homosexual marraige issue is downright hilarious. That's my laugh for the morning!

No one expects it to pass. It is done to point out how asinine, unfair, and prejudiced it is to prevent gays and lesbians from marrying.

The state made the ruling that it was okay to prevent 1 particular group from marrying only because they can't have children. That is unfair.

The initiative merely points out that the ruling is false and illogical

What a twist.

You've got to love it when people get beaten with their own stick.

It's more than that. When this inevitably gets defeated, it will actually invalidate that ruling. They will be able to bring the case for gay marriage back to court and the judge won't be able to use the 'marriage is just for procreation' ruling because the people of WA state will have already said that it isn't.
