I recall reading a sci-fi story a long time ago involving aliens that seemed to be transparent, but the outer skin was deceptive. The clear parts of the aliens actually contained the organs, and parts that appeared to have important systems were not very important. It seems a truly transparent skin would be a disadvantage, but this one is just a little translucent near the edges. I wonder how it evolved.
